After 20 years of providing highly subsidized charitable dialysis treatment for thousands of needy kidney patients in Malaysia, the MAA Medicare Charitable Foundation is now in the midst of its next major project; establishing the first Malaysian Charity Cardiac Diagnostic Centre. We have received the necessary approvals and we look forward in opening our doors come early 2017.
Today, thousands of Malaysians are not able to obtain cardiac treatment at an early stage. They simply cannot afford follow up treatments and sadly, many die. We call it the "Cardiac Patient's Dilemma". They usually have to wait 4 to 8 months, to receive treatment at Government hospitals; and neither can they afford the exorbitant cost for immediate treatment in private hospitals. Not surprisingly, heart disease is the Number One killer in our country. The tragedy is not just the loss of the patient, who is usually the only income earner for the family, but the impact is on their children, who are then forced into poverty.
We are committed to take on the role to fight heart disease, stroke, and premature sudden cardiac death, by providing quality care and comprehensive cardiac and vascular services. Our goal is to provide on-time quality medical treatment for needy Malaysians at a highly subsidised rate; targeted at a fraction of the cost of private hospitals. We will, at all times, with the Medicare Welfare Department, screen patients to verify their need for assistance.
To provide the best care, the Cardiac Diagnostic Centre will be equipped with top-end equipment such as Multi Slice CT Scan, X-Ray, Cardio Angiogram/Angioplasty equipment and facilities. The 10 bedded centre, which will cost some RM15 million to be established, will be located on the 4th and 5th floor of Wisma MAA Medicare, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.
